Thyroid Cancer Symptoms
Thyroid cancer is commonly found in people over 30 years of age. Thyroid cancer is a disease wherein there is a growth of abnormal cells in the thyroid gland. The main function of the thyroid is to secrete hormones which control the body.s metabolism. Thyroid There are no symptoms in the early stages of thyroid cancer. The symptoms are found as the thyroid cancer grows. There are basically four types of thyroid cancer. They are: papillary, medullary, follicular and anaplastic. Thyroid cancer may also spread to the other areas of the neck like, lymph nodes, blood vessels and nerves.
The common thyroid cancer symptoms are:
1. A lump in the base of the neck or anywhere else too in the neck
2. Neck gets enlarged.
3. The lymph nodes get enlarged or swollen.
4. Constant hoarseness in voice and difficulty in speaking. Hoarseness may come or go or remain constant.
5. Difficulty in swallowing or a feeling as if choking. This is caused due to the press exerted by the tumor on the gullet or the windpipe.
6. Feeling of discomfort while wearing neck-ties, scarves, necklaces etc.
7. Pain in the neck or throat or sore throat. The pain may go up to the ears.
8. Difficult to breathe or speak and changes occur in a normal voice of a person suffering.
9. Continuous or chronic cough unrelated to any illness. There may blood along with the cough.
Other thyroid cancer symptoms are:
1. Face becoming red.
2. Loose bowel movements.
3. If a thyroid nodule produces a high level of thyroid hormones causes symptoms such as loss in weight, nervousness, heartbeat becoming rapid and diarrhea.
The different types of thyroid cancer symptoms due to the enlargement of the thyroid are:
1. Hypothyroidism Symptoms: In this kind of thyroid cancer, thyroid is unable to produce required thyroid hormone. The most common type of symptoms of thyroid cancer include fatigue, gain in weight, constipation, depression, pain in the body, slow reflexes and low blood pressure.
2. Hyperthyroidism symptoms: In this type of thyroid cancer symptom there is an oversupply of thyroid hormone which results in rapid metabolism. The common symptoms are, feeling of anxiety, insomnia, weight loss which is rapid, high heart rate and high blood pressure, diarrhea, sensitivity of the eye, eyes bulging out and visionary disturbances. Also symptoms might include pregnancy problems, muscle and joints become fatigue, frequent urination or nausea, sweating more than usual, fever and feeling thirsty.
3. Autoimmune symptoms: This type of thyroid cancer symptoms is more similar to the symptoms of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
4. Goiter or Nodules Symptoms: The throat becomes enlarged in this kind of thyroid cancer symptom. There is a tight feeling in the throat, coughing or hoarseness in voice; neck becomes tender, feeling full. Symptoms like gain in weight, depression and fatigue could be caused due to the triggering of hypothyroidism by the nodules.
5. Thyroiditis Symptoms: This symptom includes pain and tenderness in the area of the thyroid.
6. Medullary thyroid cancer symptom: This type of thyroid cancer is found in patients who are born with abnormal genes. The common symptom is diarrhea.
