Esophageal Cancer SymptomsThe cancer found in the cells of the esophagus as known as esophageal cancer. Esophagus is the tube like structure which 10 inch long in length and connects the throat to the stomach. The food we eat passes down to the stomach through esophagus. The mucus produced by the inner lining glands of the esophagus keeps the passage moist which makes it easier for the food to pass by. It is situated behind the windpipe, the trachea. The esophageal cancer is mainly of two types- squamous cell carcinoma and adeno carcinoma. The cancer found in the squamous cells in the upper or middle part of the esophagus is known as squamous cell carcinomas whereas the cancer found in the glander tissues in the lower part of the esophagus is known as adeno carcinomas. Both can spread to other organs of the body such as lymph nodes, lungs, liver, bones and brain. Better diet and lifestyle can save you from developing esophageal cancer. Heavy smoking and drinking alcohol are the major risk factors for developing esophageal cancer. As the esophagus is the only passage for the food to get down to the stomach, a blockage in this area may cause severe problems. As the tumor grows in size and covers most of the esophagus, it even becomes difficult to swallow liquids. There can be unwanted weight loss due to less consumption of necessary nutrients. Changes in the way your body metabolizes nutrients results in unintentional weight loss and wasting of muscles. A combination of difficulty in swallowing with frequent hiccups also indicates the presence of tumor in the esophagus. Change in the bowel habits and bloody stools can be seen as the consequences of esophageal cancer.
